Introduction to Bo-tox
We are pleased to be able to offer this successful
treatment at the Hunts Cross Dental Centre. If you have unsightly
lines or wrinkles present or developing in the upper face region
then Botulinum Toxin treatment offers an excellent solution.
The use of Botulinum Toxin (BOTOX®, DYSPORT®)
is widespread and most people will have at least read an article
on it. Both women and men are seeing the benefits of its use to
improve personal appearance and esteem.
Dental surgeons are now recognised as being
one of the most suitable professionals to administer this treatment
due to their knowledge of facial anatomy and also experience is
administering injections.
What does Botulinum Toxin Do?
When you laugh, frown, concentrate or squint for
example, the facial muscles of the upper face cause your skin to
crease. With time these creases deepen and can turn into lines which
remain even when relaxed. Frown lines between your eyes can become
particularly noticeable at a relatively young age, making you look
angry or worried even when you’re not.
Injection of Botulinum Toxin into these affected
areas temporarily immobilises the underlying muscles responsible
for wrinkling, giving the face a more relaxed, youthful and pleasant
appearance. The wrinkles become smoother and with time can disappear
altogether.
What is Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum Toxin is a bacterium that blocks the
release of acetylcholine, the substance responsible for transmitting
electrical impulses that elicit muscle contraction. In medicine,
Botulinum toxin is injected directly into hyperactive muscles. It
has been safely and effectively used for the treatment of strabismus
(cross-eye) and blepharospasm (lip spasm) since the early 1980s.
When and how long does it work?
The initial effects of treatment become visible
within 72 hours. The maximum effect is reached in about 1 to 2 weeks.
Your facial expression will become more relaxed but by no means
mask-like. The overall result is very natural.
The effect of treatment generally lasts for 4
to 6 months. Re-treatment is then required.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects with this treatment are very rare.
If you do experience any at all then usually it is either temporary
soreness or mild bruising around the injection site. Some people may
experience a slight headache after treatment; it is safe to take a
mild pain killer to relieve this.
Who can provide Botulinum Toxin therapy?
Botulinum Toxin is a prescription medicine containing Clostridium
Botulinum type A toxin-haemagglutinin complex. It should be administered
only by medical professionals, who have an excellent understanding
of the muscles and expressions of the face and the skill to retain
your natural expression while removing the signs of aging.
How much does it cost?
This very much depends upon the requirements
of the individual. Typically treatment ranges from £175 to
£250.
Do I need to a dental patient for this treatment?
No, you are welcome to be seen just for Botulinum Toxin treatment
only if you wish.
