Introduction to Dental Implants
Dental implants have been available for many years
and have been commonplace in the USA and parts of Europe for decades
now. With private dentistry increasing in this country there has
been a rapid rise in their use here too.
Dental implants are used for the replacement
of missing teeth. They can be used in several ways to support crowns,
bridge or dentures.
What is a dental implant?
Dental implants are shaped like a screw and inserted
permanently into the bone of your jaw to act as an anchor upon which
new teeth are constructed. They are made from sterile titanium which
is compatible with human bone. The implant itself does not resemble
a tooth.
How many teeth can implants replace?
Implants can be used to replace anything from
a single tooth to all your teeth. The implants themselves are merely
anchors in the jaw bone upon which the teeth are replaced.
A single tooth missing would be replaced with
1 implant and a crown.
Several teeth missing would be replaced with implants
and bridges and or crowns.
To replace all your teeth implants can be used
alongside full bridges or dentures.
What are the advantages of dental implants?
The main advantage of implants are that they a
permanently fixed to the jaw. This can be of great benefit to people
who struggle with removable dentures. Other advantages with single
tooth implants, for example, are that no work is required on other
natural teeth.
Can anyone have dental implants?
Age is not normally an issue, general health is
of greater significance. Also with younger patients it is important
that bone has matured so rarely are implants used on under 18s.
How much do dental implants cost?
It is almost impossible to say this without
assessing each case individually. There are many factors which dictate
the cost such as the number of implants needed and the materials
used to restore the teeth and possibly bone prior to implant placement.
A full estimate of costing can be given at the treatment planning
stage. Generally each implant costs in the region of £1500.
