Brush at least twice a day.The best time to brush teeth before breakfast or at least 30mins after breakfast, then the last thing you do before going to bed. Choose a toothbrush with a small head for better access to back teeth. Soft bristles are kinder on your gums.
Use fluoridated toothpaste.Fluoride helps to harden tooth enamel and reduces your risk of decay.
Brush thoroughly.Tooth brushing should take between two and three minutes.
Floss your teeth daily.By doing the correct technique shown in the picture below will help you improve your gum health.
When using mouthwash please don’t use it at the same time as brushing, as the mouthwash only has a small amount of fluoride compared to the toothpaste. We would recommend using mouthwash after meals.
Limit acidic drinks like soft drinks, cordials and fruit juices.Food acids soften tooth material and dissolve the minerals in tooth enamel, causing holes (cavities or caries). In severe cases, teeth may be ‘eaten’ right down to the gum. We recommend if you drink acidic drinks then limit them to meal times.
Limit sugary foods.Bacteria in dental plaque change sugars into acids, again we would recommend that you keep sugary foods to meal times.
Protect your teeth from injury.Wear a mouthguard when playing sports.
Avoid using your teeth for anything other than chewing food.If you using your teeth to rip sellotape or even to open bottles there is a risk of breaking or chipping healthy teeth.
See your dentist for regular check-ups.You should also visit your dentist if you have a dental problem such as a toothache or bleeding gums. We would recommend you see your dentist every 6 months for a checkup.BACK TO BLOG
